Aug 30, 2019· A Garbage Landfill has been started at Aruwakkalu Wilpattu adjoining the Puttalam Lagoon . The site is at an old Limestone quarry pit, which had been allowed to become a forest. A herd of Elephants used to live in this forest and make occasional walks to the flood plains near Gangewadiya.
The proposed site has been identified and is located adjacent to the railhead of the limestone quarry in Aruwakkalu, Puttalam. The government envisages implementing a sanitary landfill using the abandoned and worked-out limestone quarry pits in to dispose about 1200tpd of municipal solid waste (MSW).
The 30-hectare Aruwakkalu site, leased out to Holcim Cement Company, has many abandoned quarries, from where limestone was extracted by the Cement Corporation some 20 years ago. The site will be designed to absorb up to 4,700,000 cubic metres of garbage for 10 years in 2 phases.
Aruwakkalu fossil bed is a part of Sri Lanka’s Jaffna limestone, which underlies the whole of Jaffna Peninsula and extends southwards mostly along the west coast. Previous authors have suggested that Aruwakkalu contains a rich assemblage of vertebrate and invertebrate fossils.
